Is Sony going to change how we take ‘Point ‘n Shoot’ photos?

Sony is rumoured to be working on new ‘lens’ cameras that will pair with your smart phone.

Rumours and leaked photos indicate that Sony are working on a new “lens” camera that could introduces a shift in who consumers will approach point and shoot photography.

The new Sony DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100 lenses are much more than just a lens. They have a built in sensor, processor, Wifi/NFC  connection and an SD card slot. What they lack is an LCD screen, but they will use your smart phone to provide that. They will clip to you smart phone and use its screen wirelessly as an LCD viewer.

You’ll still need to tote around two separate devices, phone and lens, however the lens / camera will be much less cumbersome than a separate point ‘n shoot camera.

The DSC-QX10 spec is rumoured to be 18mega pixel sensor and 10X optical zoom.

Would you want to carry a separate device when you’ve already got a camera on your phone? Well the question to that lies in whether you want higher quality images than your smartphone can deliver, and convenience of an optical zoom option for you image capture. Besides these considerations, the success of sales will depend on other factors also, primarily price and possibly the video capture quality. 1080 HD is currently where the bar is set in consumer’s minds.

While the rumour mill indicates that these will be able to twin with various high end smart phones, one wonders if the initial models will only provide pairing with Sony smart phones to help boost sales of those products.

Confirmation of the DSC-QX10 and DSC-QX100 ‘lens’ products may be announced at the IFA Sony Press Conference on Sept 4th.
